Guiding Light, Plug In Baby, Time Is Running Out, Supermassive Black Hole, Starlight.

My third trip to Berlin in this year was planned in June, when i got my Muse ticket.

Good ones were sold out in a matter of days. Unfortunately i didn't have a slightest idea, how much this concert would interfere with my uni schedule. I had to pull off an unbelievable trick of seeing one of the best british bands live and getting to the research seminar in my city about 200 km away from Berlin on time next morning. It is really that important and i suspect the department of newer and newest history will be keeping me pretty busy throughout this year. I managed to get up at 4.30 after the show, walk through empty streets of Berlin, all covered with golden legacy of the autumn under the starry skies and catch the first ICE train in the southern direction. Huge thanks to red bull drink and coffee which kept me awake.
However, it all was worth it. I couldn;t imagine that i'll be getting any good place with my standing ticket, but since it was already afternoon when i arrived in the city i decided to give it a try and went straight to the Ostbahnhof, where the O2 World is located. My experience helped me to get into the first row after waiting outside for an hour or so. Security was not irritating and didn't spoil all the fun, as sometimes happens. The huge hall was almost full, except for some distant seating places in the third level. Beer and Wurst were sold everywhere. The warm up act were The Horrors, which is logical when seeing them and listening to the kind of music they performed. Another 40 minutes of watching their techs cleaning the stage and the lights went out finally. For the first two songs - Uprising and Resistance - the guys stayed in the metal cages liften above the stage in the shaft-like columns. Then it got to the normal way, while there was a great show projected on these columns. Concerts have their specific atmosphere and totally different sound - this is what i value at such events alot. Muse managed to create this special mood, although they didn't communicate with the public that much as other bands usually do. i really liked Guiding Light, Plug In Baby, Time Is Running Out, Supermassive Black Hole, Starlight. It's a pity that they didn't play Butterflies and Hurricanes. Knights of Cydonia was the last song for that night...

Source:

View on Mariendom and St. Severikirche from Petersberg citadel. Protestant churches were used as the source of stones for construction, and the remaining lonely towers still can be seen around the old town. The city didn't suffer any serious damage during the last war and retained most of its medieval charme. At twilight you might listen to melancholic music by the river bank or meet a weirdly looking monk, who at first sight would appear like a ghost from another time.

My first impression of Cologne was greatly influenced by the main train station which wasn't built оn an open field like somewhere else, but is squeezed on the tiny strip of land between the Rhine and the famous cathedral. Lazy tourists must love this. Who cares that all trains literally have to hang over the water in the queue for the free track and the station is always full of people - but only 20 steps outside and you find yourself in front of the Kölner Dom:

Washington,DC Metro Station on a cold January morning.

The man with a violin played 6 Bach pieces for about an hour. During that time nearly 2 thousand people went through the station. After 3 min. a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule. 4 minutes later the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. 6 minutes:..A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. 10 minutes: a 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly. The musician played continuously. Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32.

He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. The violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?
